Though we were late in celebrating the Chinese New Year - the Year of the Goat began on Feb. 19 – we decided on a visit to Teapot, a downtown Northampton favorite, as the way we'd mark the holiday. Teapot operates out of a Main Street space that has the trappings typical of the Far Eastern restaurant experience. The walls are painted a rich red (according to Chinese tradition, a lucky color), and an assortment of wall hangings and decorative accessories enhance the visual environment. House specials get top billing on Teapot's menu. They include iconic selections such as Peking Duck ($16. 95) and Crispy Whole Fish ($18. 95) as well as more unusual choices like Grand Marnier Shrimp ($17. 95). Other options such as Pineapple Chicken ($9. 75), Twice Cooked Pork ($9. 25), and Moo... Teapot, like many of its peers, has taken on a multicultural identity, featuring Japanese fare in addition to the standard Chinese culinary compendium. Sushi is a big part of that secondary repertoire, and it's available as entree specials and on a by-the-piece basis. Tofu Teriyaki ($10. 95) and Chicken Katsu ($15. 95) are typical of the kitchen-produced Japanese options that Teapot cooks up. Starter choices from the Chinese tradition include Egg Roll ($1. 95), Steamed Meat Dumplings ($5. 25), and the... That roast pork mixture had the rich sweetness of barbecue. Our other first course, a Philadelphia Roll ($4. 95), was a definite East-meets-West creation. An uramaki (inside-out roll) variant, the Philadelphia roll represented a fusion of Japanese technique and Western ingredients, with a nori-wrapped center of cream cheese and smoked salmon surrounded by vinegar-laced sushi rice. Though competently put together, the roll was an idea that we couldn't quite endorse. Smoked salmon and cream cheese, we'd suggest, are better atop a bagel than as sushi components. Listed on the menu as prepared "New York Chinatown style," Shrimp and Scallops with Ginger Scallion Sauce ($16. 95) was a dish of subtlety and sophistication. Presented on a bed of iceberg lettuce, the jumbo shrimp and whole scallops had been sauced by a delicately flavored white glaze. Matchstick ginger and scallion crosscuts lent color as well of sparks of earthy character to the composition. Though duck isn't exactly a mainstream dish in our culture, it is in the Far East, and Teapot offers duck in several forms. The Plum Duck ($13. 50) we tried suffered slightly from the compromise most restaurants make when preparing whole poultry – they partially precook the bird before rewarming it at time of service. Sliced crosswise into manageable pieces, a half duck was arranged over steamed onions. A dark colored, moderately sweet glaze flavored with star anise and hoisin sauced the presentation. Steamed broccoli, mung bean sprouts, and carrot shreds served as accompaniments. Licensed for the sale of beer and wine, Teapot stocks a serviceable selection of each. Lunch specials are offered at Teapot daily except Sundays and holidays. As is customary, they are three-part packages that include soup and rice. Choices range from Broccoli with Garlic Sauce ($5. 95) and Kung Pao Chicken ($6. 50) to Pepper Steak with Onions ($6. 75) and Crispy Sesame Shrimp ($7. 95). Japanese bento box lunches are also available. Name: Teapot Chinese & Japanese Cuisine. Address: 116 Main St. , Northampton. Hours: Monday through Thursday, 11 a. m. to 10 p. m. The Bardo of Waking Life
The Bardo of Waking Life
Published by North Atlantic Books 2011

552 pages

An avant garde set of improvisational essays, Richard Grossinger’s The Bardo of Waking Life is a meditation on the Tibetan Buddhist bardo realm which, in popular culture, is viewed as the bridge between lives, the state people enter after death and before rebirth. This book examines waking life and its history and language as if it were a bardo state rather than ultimate reality, and thus seeks a context for life (and dreams), even as it addresses more "mundane issues" including genetic theory, the war in Iraq and George W. Bush's presidency, North Korea, advertising, global warming, Prison Industrial Culture, childhood trauma, even country western music. Written with playfulness and precision, Bardo takes a new, probing approach to all the important questions of creation, destruction,...
