Sorcerer lacks the magic of later G&S work

The music is good, but the telling of the story lacks impact, despite the best efforts of a memorable Sorcerer, whose panache and stage presence livened things up no end, alongside horned demons, and a dragon's blood pink teapot brewing a (fake) love

Comedy coming to NLT stage

Following “Seniors of the Sahara,” the Neuse Little Theatre will continue it's 42nd season in November with the musical murder mystery spoof “Something's Afoot.” Auditions for that show will be Sept. 14-15. Next up in February is Tennessee Williams

The extraordinary Margaret Leng Tan unveils a cabinet of musical curiosities

Whimsical and intriguing, it echos the Beatles' pioneering use of technology in their recording of the same song, while Tan's limitless ability to bend the timbre of the teapot's sound has the audience questioning if a china teapot is a musical instrument.

Comedy coming to NLT stage - News & Observer

The Neuse Little Theatre will open its 42nd season on Friday with a comedy the entire family can enjoy. “Seniors of the Sahara” tells the story of Sylvia Goldberg, a retired New Jersey school teacher who gets more than she bargained for when she buys an old teapot while attending her grandson’s wedding in Israel. Upon returning to her retirement community, Sylvia discovers the teapot is home to a “geriatric genie” named Eugene who has a “bad back and a penchant for vodka and V8,” as the script puts it. Hilarity ensues as Sylvia endeavors to hide Eugene... The final act might even have some romance, teased Stephanie Veren, who is directing the production for the Neuse Little Theatre. “This show will speak to folks of all ages,” she said. “Some of the humor may go over a younger child’s head, but there’s no foul language, and they’ll understand it’s funny. In a first for the Neuse Little Theatre, “Seniors of the Sahara” will open with a two-minute video that shows Savalas’ reaction in Egypt when he realizes his genie is gone. The community troupe used multimedia elements in staging “The Diary of Anne Frank” and “Death of a Salesman,” Veren said, but it has never produced a film of its own for a play. Shooting the video beforehand eliminated the need to build an Egyptian set for a two-minute scene, Veren said, and it also gave the NLT a chance to try something new. In another first for Veren, who has directed six NLT shows, she called in a choreographer to help with a scene that takes place during a social dance at the characters’ retirement home. Patsy Castellano of Clayton taught one of the actresses to belly dance, and the other performers learned to deliver lines while moving their feet to music. In casting, Veren said she tried as much as possible to find actors who were similar in real life to their characters in the play. “I like to have my actors give as natural a performance for the characters they portray as possible, because I feel that real life can be funny in and of itself,” she said. By those standards, Veren did an excellent job casting Nancy Gibbs in the lead role as Slyvia Goldberg. Just like her character, Gibbs is a retired school teacher. And while she might not have spent much time there, Gibbs confessed that she was actually born in New Jersey. “It’s my dirty little secret,” she said. “I was born in New Jersey, but I moved here very young. Reggie Parker plays the “geriatric genie” but said he shares just one of those two attributes with the character. The biggest challenge has been learning the odd phrases the genie uses, he said, such as “elongated tryst of the tongue. “That’s not everyday language, and there’s a lot of that type of language that the genie spews forth during this play,” he said. “It’s very flowery and a little convoluted. Following “Seniors of the Sahara,” the Neuse Little Theatre will continue it’s 42nd season in November with the musical murder mystery spoof “Something’s Afoot. The season continues in April with the all-male musical “Elephant Sighs” and wraps up in June with a comedic production of “Always a Bridesmaid. Shaw University hosted a memorial “pep rally” for Keyona Verdell Thursday, September 10, 2015 inside the C. C. Spaulding Gymnasium at Shaw. Verdell was struck and killed by a vehicle Sunday morning on New Hope Church Road in Raleigh.

day seven--teapot
day seven--teapot

A WHOLE WEEK!! Well I have nothing special to celebrate an entire week of doing SPs, that is, I didn't have a super cool shot for today, but this was Day 2 of hanging out with Olivia We were hanging out in the kitchen waiting for her band to come in. I was able to quickly snap this before we hosed the guitarist (aka Evan aka bestie) with a water gun. It was freezing...sooo he didn't really appreciate it, but for my defense, we used warm water ...Either way, he quickly snatched the water gun from my hand and began shooting. Then I had to help him with the guitar case. Then we all went to the at-home studio and they began playing...I have no musical talent whatsoever. So I got to take pictures of them while they rehearsed. They turned out pretty cool. If you wanna check out those shots they're here: www.flickr.com/photos/31446727@N06/ or here: www.flickr.com/photos/33474602@N08/sets/72157611435736593/ This is also a late post. At least I took a shot. : ) 007/365

"Tea" is for Trumpet - Spout View
"Tea" is for Trumpet - Spout View

Influenced by the work of Richard Notkin, I ventured out to experiment with a positive statement about music, the instruments that make music, the instrumentalists who put themselves into their instruments in order that we might enjoy what comes out...thus the "Tea" is for Trumpet teapot construction that you see in its leather hard state here. If you have other thoughts about what this teapot says (other than questioning the sanity of the potter), please share. Most of the carving is complete at this point. There may be a significant amount of surface texturing forthcoming if time allows. This particular stoneware is so rich looking when high fired, I may stick with nothing but stains on the outside. For other ceramic musical instrument themed pieces, see "M" is for MugPhlute
