Satsuma style tea set . Q. I received a hand-painted Japanese tea set from my grandmother, who purchased it at an estate sale in Detroit, Michigan, many years ago. The set is very colorful with gold accents and is in great condition. There are six 7-inch plates, six cups and saucers, a teapot, sugar bowl and creamer. The marking on your Satsuma-style tea set indicates that it was manufactured around 1955. Satsuma stoneware or earthenware pottery features a great deal of elaborate decoration and oriental themes. It was produced almost entirely for the Western export market β€” Japanese collectors had very little interest in it. Very high-quality Satsuma ware pieces have a buff body, a finely crackled glaze and exquisite detail. This may be Kyoto Satsuma, the common name for Satsuma-style export wares produced in the Kyoto area into the 20th century. The Kyoto pottery is usually characterized by simple details, heavily applied moriage and rich, thick red and blue enamel. Moriage is a slip decoration of raised enamel and is mostly limited to pieces made outside of the Satsuma region. At auction, the set might fetch $80-$125. A reasonable retail price tag would be around $250. Eastlake dresser. This dresser was in my grandmother's home for many years. The mirror is wavy and does seem old, but there are no maker's marks anywhere. I hope you can give me some information about how old it is and where it was made. It measures 32 inches tall and 72 inches to the top of the mirror. The top is 36 inches wide and 18 inches deep. Your Eastlake style oak dresser was made in America, around 1900-1910. British architect and author Charles Eastlake (1836-1906) originated the architectural and home design reform aesthetic now known as the Eastlake Movement, which valued... In America, many manufacturers used the ideas and drawings in Eastlake's book, " Hints on Household Taste in Furniture Upholstery and Other Details ," to mass-produce Eastlake-style furniture. Eastlake furniture is generally geometric, with subtle curves and lightly incised ornamental carving, in contrast to the more common, highly decorated pieces popular during the Victorian era. Today, Eastlake furniture is not as popular as it was in the late 20th century, and prices have declined. At auction, it might sell for $100-$150, while a retail asking price would be $200-$300. Art Deco lamp. This lamp belonged to my grandmother and is at least 90 years old. It measures 14 inches high and 6 inches wide. The base is black marble and the ball light shade is gold colored glass. Your Art Deco-era (1920s-1940s) table lamp has a very appealing theme and should be attractive to collectors. The important unknown, which will determine its value, is whether the woman is made from spelter or cast bronze. Spelter, an alloy of zinc and copper, was often used for many cast, ornamental Art Deco and Art Nouveau pieces in the late 19th century and early 20th century, "standing in" for cast bronze. To test if this is spelter, you can lightly scratch the base. If it is brass-finished spelter, it will show a silvery scratch. If your lamp is spelter, it would likely sell at auction for $250-$350, and have a retail price of around $500-$700. If it is solid bronze, it would be more valuable, realizing $500-$800 at auction and priced at $800-$1,000 in an antiques shop. Art Nouveau notepad. We're interested in knowing more about a small metal notepad we bought some years ago. Its stamped-metal cover is non-magnetic and its closure is a tiny metal-capped wooden pencil. Dimensions are roughly 1-3/4 inches wide by 2-3/4 inches long and 1/4 inch thick. Your Art Nouveau (1890-1910) notepad or autograph book is probably French and may be silver-plated. These were popular items and are interesting collectibles today. Without the chain and clip your charming little book would probably sell for $40-$60 at auction, and would carry a retail price.
