In the Steps of Canada's Literary Giants - BLOUIN ARTINFO

Source: www.blouinartinfo.com

Founded as a venture by Joseph Bloore and Willian Botsford Jarvis in 1830, even their entrepreneurial spirit could surely not have imagined that Yorkville, in Toronto’s north, would become the city’s most upscale district. Home to the first five-star hotel in Canada, it is not the expense of the area that gives it its character though. It is the story of how it became a center for Canadian culture – musical, literary and artistic – much of which centers around the former art deco Park Plaza Hotel, now known as the prestigious Park Hyatt. The hotel itself began life as a wayside inn, named Tecumseh Wigwag. It served travelers heading north out of Toronto for around 55 years from 1820. Bloore and Jarvis’ new village connected the area via omnibus service in 1849, and the rapid population increase in the residential area saw it annexed by petition to... It was opened in 1936 after years of delays following the Great Depression, with a Hugh G. Holman steel-frame design and a modernist second tower by British-born architect, Peter Dickinson, who also created the city’s Hummingbird Centre and the... An iconic structure within the evolving Yorkville neighborhood, located across from the University of Toronto, its reputation and influence grew through the literary giants who would not only come through its doors, but mention it within their works. In her breakthrough 1969 protofeminist novel The Edible Woman , poet and author Margaret Atwood placed her characters on the rooftop bar, with “décor reminiscent of the eighteenth century,” at a time when fellow writers like novelist Morley... By that time Yorkville had bloomed into a center of bohemian culture and counter culture. Hippies gathered, but so did some of Toronto’s finest talent, including Neil Young, Joni Mitchell and fiction-writer William Gibson. At the center of it all, the Park Plaza Hotel had come of age, just surrounded by culture, but a haven within it. By 1999, when the Park Hyatt came calling, the prestigious hotel was sold at the highest cost per room ever seen in Canada –... Today the refurbished hotel, with the Royal Ontario Museum (ROM) and its Michael Lee-Chin Crystal façade on its doorstep, remains a cultural monument as well as the city’s most luxurious stay option. “When I walk around the neighborhood I am often reminded of how intimate the Yorkville experience is while catering to such a variety of unique tastes and preferences. Likewise, when our guests walk through our doors I am pleased that they are able to enjoy the smallest of details that will create fond memories of a place in time never to be forgotten,” says Strome. With 336 guestrooms and 45 suites, there are plenty of options, but it is the Maple Leaf and Trillium suites that are the most likely to remain in the guest’s memory. 1,500 square feet of space includes a large kitchenette, living room and dining rooms, and a powder room. The high ceiling creates a sense of true grandeur, as if one is within a royal mansion, rather than the 15 floor of a tower. Priding itself on the “art of dining, it is named after the Roman goddess of harvest, and offers creations like Cornish Hen and Green Pea Fagotini, and Pan Seared Branzini with Chorizo and Baby Kale. Best enjoyed here, though, is Afternoon Tea, served in multi-color art deco teapots with a tray of scones. But it is the Roof Lounge, the gathering point for Toronto’s most influential throughout the 20 Century that remains, literally, the high point. The view south over the ROM towards the CN Tower appears like a patchwork quilt of neighborhoods, each with their own character, each with tales to tell. And while sipping a Cabo Wabo Reposado tequila up high, it is inspiring to know that some of those stories were written right here, atop the city’s most influential hotel.

Beth had decided that today she would walk further up the lane and see what there was to see. As she walked she noticed the beautiful wild flowers and marvelled at the trees just starting to bud. Suddenly she came across a house set back from the lane. Beth picked her way carefully up the rough track, to where a rickety, weather-beaten gate hung crazily on its hinges. Beyond, a tangle of weeds and overgrown shrubs almost hid the old house from view. But there it stood, silent and long neglected. It was as if, behind its closed doors, it was waiting – waiting for Beth – waiting to become once more a place of laughter and music, companionship and prayer.

Coffee pot, ‘The Tea Party’
Coffee pot, ‘The Tea Party’

Wedgwood creamware coffee pot made around 1763 with a transfer printed design called the ‘Tea Party’. This was one of the most popular transfer-printed designs of the 18th century. It depicts a man and woman seated outdoors at a tea table, with a black servant in the background. Several factories produced different versions of the print on teapots, jugs and plates, catering for the increasing British taste for tea and coffee drinking. Drinking sweet, milky tea was a fashionable and expensive pastime, which was linked to the supply of sugar from the West Indies. Accession number: 1951 M246
