The origins of the lemon is hard to pin down, even though there's a history of cultivation going back about 2,500 years. (The citron is larger than a lemon with a very thick rind. ) Food historians have trouble deciphering whether citrons mentioned in ancient documents refer to citron or lemon. More recent documents note that the lemon arrived in Southern Italy from India or China around A. D. 100. In A. D. 700 they were found in Persia (today's Iran), Iraq and Egypt. By the 11th century, the fruit was farmed throughout the Arab world and the Mediterranean region. The lemon arrived on this side of the pond in 1493 when Christopher Columbus brought lemon seeds to Hispaniola — his first stop in the Caribbean. Spanish explorers are believed to have included the lemon among the fruits they introduced to the New World. Early on, the fruit was used mainly for medicinal purposes, and the tree was favored as a garden ornamental. He experimented with the sailors' diet, adding lemon juice to their food. The results convinced him that the acidic fruit could prevent scurvy. This medicinal value was appreciated by California's Gold Rush miners in the mid-19th century as protection against the feared scurvy. The fruit was in such short supply that prices escalated to $1 per lemon — gold from a tree. (Vitamin C, aka ascorbic acid, the responsible ingredient, was first identified in 1930. ). Lemons are touted for their antioxidants and cancer-fighting properties. Many scientists believe that lemon juice (without sugar) may benefit the kidneys, possibly providing protection against kidney stone development. So with all the good stuff in lemons, why is the word "lemon" used to label inferior products. Evan Morris, an etymologist (word historian), author and columnist, wrote that "despite all the good lemons have done, they've suffered from an image problem since the dawn of their cultivation — due primarily to their stinging acidity and tough... In the mid-19th century, "lemon" was used as a colloquial term for a person of a "tart" disposition. in slang usage, lemon denoted a "sucker" or "loser. Morris notes this may "stem from the idea that it's easy to suck or squeeze the juice out of" these losers. Whatever the reason, by the early 20th century, the word "lemon" was firmly established as "something worthless" in American slang. I can't imagine life without lemons. The late Chilean poet Pablo Neruda said it best in his poem "Oda al Limón (Ode to a Lemon)": "So, when you hold the hemisphere of a cut lemon above your plate, you spill a universe of gold.
