If your idea of a good time at the movies requires a three-act narrative consisting of the hook, the conflict, and the climax, followed by a quick resolution, then Amateurs of the Impossible is not for you. Filmmakers Margaret Rorison and Zach Iannnazzi are like painters — or, as Orson Welles suggested, poets with camera lenses for eyes. They reach beyond the presentational to build film-loop elegies, plein air panoplies, and celluloid sonatas that whip up dreams, memories, emotions, and musings. Rorison, co-founder of Baltimore's much-loved roaming experimental film series Sight Unseen, contributes six shorts, including a handmade study of Danish wind power, a collaboration with the Effervescent Dance Collective, a landscape portrait of... Iannazzi offers three shorts, including a found-footage scrapbook of fading Northern California and a superimposed diptych of home movies that explores "mid-century male bonding and the hubris of hunting culture. " "Amateurs of the Impossible" begins at 7:30 p. m. at Artists Television Access, 992 Valencia St. , S. F. $10. 415-824-3890 or sfcinematheque. Was Jack the Ripper a Freemason. Was Mozart poisoned for revelations in The Magic Flute. There's absolutely no indication of poisoning but, during the last seven years of Mozart's life, he was a well-documented Freemason, (The Magic Flute's librettist Emanuel Schikaneder was as well) and his work was rife with symbolism. The "Queen of the Night" is said to represent the anti-Mason Roman Catholic Empress Maria Theresa, while "Sarastro" epitomizes Ignas von Born, an eminent naturalist and Masonic leader. Flute was by no means Mozart's only Masonic work. He composed the opening and closing ceremonial music for his Lodge as well as Masonic Funeral Music in C minor. In "Mozart and Masonic Semiotics," violinist Steve Machtinger and the London Quintet help crack the code within the G minor String Quintet, written in 1787, just after the demise of Mozart's father and fellow-Mason. "Mozart and Masonic Semiotics" begins at 6 p. m. at Commonwealth Club, 555 Post St. , S. F. $7-20. 415-597-6700 or commonwealthcluborg. See Some Like it Hot on Friday, August 28, 8p. m. at the Paramount Theatre, 2025 Broadway, Oakland. The classiest and screwiest classic screwball comedy of all time. Joe (Tony Curtis) and Jerry (Jack Lemmon), a couple of down-on-their-luck musicians, witness a gangland massacre perpetrated by crime lord Spats Columbo (George Raft) and have to get out of town fast. Disguising themselves as women, Joe (now Josephine) and Jerry (now Daphne) seek refuge with an all-girl band fronted by torch singer Sugar Kane Kowalczyk (Marilyn Monroe). Hilarity and mayhem ensue as "Josephine" attempts to woo Sugar and "Daphne" is wooed by millionaire Osgood Fielding III (Joe E. Brown). Inspired casting, sparkling dialogue, and a mesmerizing performance by an incredibly voluptuous Marilyn Monroe ensured that Billy Wilder won the Oscar for Best Director that year. Tony Curtis won Best Actor in a Leading Role. Movie classics feature 35mm film prints, a newsreel, cartoon, previews, Dec-O-Win raffle, and a live Wurlitzer organ serenade. Purchase advance tickets here and enter to win a pair of tickets here. Tickets available at the Paramount Box Office on movie night. Admission is only $5. While many a restaurant boasts a modest backyard beer garden, Drake’s main event is its mass of outdoor dining. Enclosed in brick and salvaged wood with six strategically places trees, sprawls of patio furniture, and several open fire pits, the patio has the feel of something in the making. Beyond traditional Drake’s brews, you’ll find more experimental and unusual offerings, many of which aren’t available anywhere else outside the brewery. There are rotating taps for guest brewers, though with full portfolio of Drake’s already including anything from the a Session IPA to a honeyed Hella Hellies to the Aroma Therapy Double IPA (which comes in at 10 percent ABV), you’ll hardly need... Good thing Drake's does growlers. All that beer is enough to give anyone the munchies, and what better to pair it with than wood-fired pizza. Covered in sweet figs, mozzarella, goat cheese, prosciutto and olives, the Mosaic is unique in both its savory-sweetness and number of ingredients.

The fingerprints say the murderer is the man who's just been executed ... At 11.05 one December evening in Richmond, Virginia, convicted murderer Ronnie Joe Waddell is pronounced dead in the electric chair. At the morgue Dr Kay Scarpetta waits for Waddell's body. Preparing to perform a post-mortem before the subject is dead is a strange feeling, but Scarpetta has been here before. And Waddell's death is not the only newsworthy event on this freezing night: the grotesquely wounded body of a young boy is found propped against a rubbish skip. To Scarpetta the two cases seem unrelated, until she recalls that the body of Waddell's victim had been arranged in a strikingly similar position ...

On portraiture. For an amateur, and even for some professionals, what you photograph is who you are. There is a booming community of self-portraitists out there in the world, some very talented, filling the pages of flickr's explore with their faces, poses, composite images etc. I've never gotten into this kind of photography, chiefly because I think all images are self-portraits. That is to say - all earnest photographs made for photography's sake are self portraits. They are portraits of my reaction, emotion and thought. Why would I need to put myself in this frame when the frame tells you more than my face could? You can learn a lot about what someone values by the photographs he or she makes. There's a reason I don't post photographs of Disneyworld or box stores here. The world has enough of that and photography is my way of understanding the world and sharing the images projected on the back of my mind. It's the great privilege of an amateur to photograph, say and...

The Banqueting House at Melford Hall
The Banqueting House at Melford Hall

The Banqueting House At the north west corner of the west garden lies the Banqueting House. It is a rare survival of Tudor architecture dating from the early 17th century. A recently discovered detailed inventory of goods and chattels documents the brass, pewter, plate and linen found in the Banqueting House and Melford Hall in 1635, when it would also have contained a marble table and five gilt wood chairs. The panelling and sash windows were installed in the 18th century, together with the furnace on the ground floor, which fed a network of heating pipes, perhaps so that the building could be used as an orangery. With its dramatic skyline of tall chimneystacks and fanciful octagonal turrets, Melford Hall is one of the finest and most satisfying Elizabethan houses in the East of England. It stands beside the River Chad, at the northern end of Long Melford, a village noted for its wide village green leading up to the great perpendicular church. Melford Hall is a mellow red...
